Lac resin is a traditional material of interest to craft and coating makers. Herby Factor supplies dried resin pieces and fine powder. Its useful qualities depend on the grade and processing stage, so a clear specification matters more than treating every lac product as ready-to-use shellac.
Several names describe processing stages
FAO describes lac as a resinous insect secretion and distinguishes crude sticklac, cleaned seedlac and extracted shellac. The names reflect material processing. A raw resin pouch should not automatically be assumed to have the refinement, colour or performance of commercial shellac flakes.
Pieces or powder?
Pieces retain a visible form that can be inspected before an appropriate project. Powder is easier to measure when a method calls for ground resin. Choose a process designed for the actual grade, and test a small sample for the intended finish before working on a valuable object. This guide does not give heating or solvent-mixing instructions.
Do not confuse craft and food grades
Some refined shellac products have specialised uses, but that does not make an unverified resin pouch edible. The store does not represent this product as food grade. Do not ingest it or assume it is suitable for cosmetic formulations without the relevant specification.
Keep handling practical
Store sealed away from moisture and excessive heat, contain powder dust and follow the safety guidance for the complete craft process. Businesses should request available grade and batch information before selecting a sample or ordering repeat quantities.
